Tips for finding books in Korean
Can't find books in Korean? Check the list below for better search results.
- Finding Korean books is NOT EASY so please feel free to ask help!
- You can use Korean for searching in library catalog but some records may not show up as results even though the items are available. One of the reasons is because the bibliographic information is recorded either in Korean or Chinese depending upon the publication. Besides there are some technical problems yet to be resolved with Korean scripts in library catalog.
- Therefore, searching in Romanized form will bring the most comprehensive results for Korean books. (Use McCune-Reischauer Romanization System and LC Word Division Rule for Korean http://www.loc.gov/catdir/cpso/Korean.pdf) However, you may need to search some keywords using "The Revised Romanization of Korean" as more and more scholars are using this system since its introduction in 2000. (Please refer to Wikipedia page for Korean Government System at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revised_Romanization_of_Korean)
- In UW WorlCat, type quotation marks (" ") before and after the word in Korean. This will make more accurate search for a keyword that is typed. For example, "한국사회"
- When you give keywords in English for books about Korea, always try to give "Korea" as an additional keyword. For example, if you are looking for Korean human rights. Try human rights and Korea.
- In UW-only Catalog, give no space in the string of Korean titles search. e.g. 신문기사로본조선영화
