Collection Guidelines: Sociology: Scope

Guidelines by which materials are purchased for the Sociology collection of the UW Libraries (Seattle Campus).

Scope

a. Chronological

Primary emphasis is on the twentieth century through today and on materials that support the study of the history of Sociology. 

b. Geographical

While there are no geographical limitations, areas of principal collecting focus are North America and international or multi-regional materials

c. Language

Primary emphasis is on English language materials, but materials in other languages are purchased on a highly selective basis.

d. Format

Monographs and sets (books & e-books), serials (journals), reprints, audio, video, and datasets are included in the collection. 

e. Exclusions

Popular sociology materials (e.g. true crime literature) are generally not collected. Textbooks may be purchased on a selective basis.
