How to find DVDs and Video at the UW Libraries and beyond
Are you interested in finding and borrowing movies, TV shows and other videos from the UW Libraries?
If so, keep watching...
The media center in odegaard library houses the UW's main collection of videos and other media material, so let's start there.
Point your browser to the media center's home page at www.lib.washington.edu/media
From here you can either search or browse for movie and TV titles.
To search move your cursor down to this box and type what it is you are looking for. I'm looking for a specific film with a pretty unique title -- "Slumdog Millionaire" -- so I'm going to leave it on the default keyword setting.
Click search.
Here's the movie listed in the UW catalog. We can see that each of UW's 3 campuses have a copy of the movie. Here are their call numbers. It looks like 2 copies - the Media Center's and UW Tacoma's -- are currently checked out with multiple people waiting for them to be returned. However, UW Bothell's is available. If you are at Bothell you can pick this up from the library today OR if you are not at Bothell you can request this copy form this page by clicking on this button and following the instructions. UW Bothell will send it to a UW library of your choice within a few days.
You can also browse online for movies, tv shows, and other videos by going back to the Media Center's homepage and clicking the "browse media" icon. For example, let's say you want to browse for a genre of TV programs, such as action and adventure. Head over to television genres and select what you are looking for. The results default in alphabetical order, but you can resort them according to title, author, year, and so on. I'm going to select reverse year: that will put them in date order, newest first.
If you follow these steps and you can't find what you are looking for, try searching with UW WorldCat. Go back to our homepage and click here. This will bring you the advanced search screen for worldcat local, a catalog that searches other libraries around the globe. Just type in what you are looking for -- how about "Monty Python's flying circus" -- and limit your search to the format you are interested in. For videos it's "visual material." click search. From the results page you can select what is you want. Even if UW doesn't own you still may be able to borrow it from a Summit library.
If you still can't find it, just ask! Media center contact information is available here. You can call, email, or just stop by. we are always happy to help.
Thanks for watching.
