How do I access full-text articles with the proxy bookmarklet?

Have you ever found yourself on a website that appears to let you download an article, but then asks you to pay for access?

Did you know that current UW students, faculty and staff can often get the entire journal article online for free via the UW Libraries subscription, simply using your UW NetID & password?

Rather than backtracking to the UW Libraries homepage every time, try installing the Proxy Bookmarklet tool on your computer.  This button will allow you to instantly sign in to the UW Libraries without leaving your webpage, so that you’ll have immediate access to the online fulltext journal articles you need.

To install the proxy bookmarklet, start at the UW Libraries homepage at www.lib.washington.edu

Click on Off-Campus Access Tools.

If you’re using Internet Explorer, right click on the words UW Libraries Bookmarklet, and choose “Add to Favorites”.

Click Yes at the security alert.

You now have the proxy bookmarklet installed – it’s that easy!

You can also click on the link and drag it to your Bookmarks or Links toolbar.  This works in Firefox and Safari.

Now, when you find yourself on a webpage that asks you to pay for access, first click on your Proxy Bookmarket tool

Log in with your UW NetID and password

And you’ll have instant access to the full-text.

Remember, if you get stuck or have any questions; contact a UW Librarian by clicking on the “Ask Us” link on the UW Libraries homepage.
