New Books at the Built Environments (BE) Library

  • Pioneers of Modernism
    ISBN/ISSN: 0522851789
"The Arts and Crafts movement - emerging in the 1880s and 1890s - brought a breath of fresh air to Australian design. A sense of innovation and understanding of the values of simplicity, harmony and unity permeated both architecture and the allied arts and crafts." " Professor Harriet Edquist traces the development of the movement from its origins. "
  • Built by Blacks
    ISBN/ISSN: 1596294590
"They helped dig the canal, grade the hills and even raise the state capitol, but African Americans are largely unrecognized for the role they played in the construction and design of Rickmond, Virginia, one of America's most historic cities.

Before the Civil War, Richmond's manual labor supply drew heavily upon black slaves. After emancipation, free blacks continued to make significant contributions to the city's structural evolution. Richmond's blacks became contractors and designers, and one woman, Ethel Bailey Furman, became Virginia's first African American Female Architect.

While many prominent African American neighborhoods and historic sites have been lost to poor planning, demolition or the desire to bury a troubled past, these landmarks receive the study and appreciation they deserve in Selden Richardson's fascinating chronicle, 'Built By Blacks.'"

Tips for Finding Architecture Books

  • Tend to use the minimum number of words in your search. e.g., rather than "Le Corbusier Unite d'Habitation" use "Corbusier Unite"
  • Use the search interface's "advanced search" feature.
  • If you find a useful book, look at the record's subject headings listed for similar items.
  • If using World Cat, think about limiting the search to books or articles to strain out unwanted media.
  • If using World Cat's "cite/export" feature at the top of the record to automatically generate a citiation.
  • If you are new to a subject, use World Cat first to see all that is available. If you know what you want, go directly to the UW Libraries Catalog.
  • For general searches, use place and proper names along with the word "architecture" or the building type for which you are looking. e.g., "houses North Carolina," "churches Kahn," "Hittite architecture."
  • Ask Alan Michelson for help getting started.
